Following my graduation with the Bachelor of Music (Boston University in 1963) as well as observing the liberal arts as an academic (Brown University 1971-75) I am currently strongly devoted to the integrated method of learning that incorporates the study of art and other fields of study. It's not unusual for the ethnomusicologist (MA 1967 and PhD from UCLA)! This isn't a surprise since the department of ethnomusicology of UC Berkeley, where I taught from 1975 until 1976 is located in the college of letters and Sciences' Department of Music. I like pursuing multiple pursuits and focusing on the bigger picture. I love teaching undergraduates (majors and non-majors, and for which I've composed three textbooks-Music in India: The Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically, as well as Music in Japan: Experiencing the Music of Japan, expressing Culture) and graduate students. I have periods where I'm the sole professor as well as periods during where I am involved in administrative tasks (such as being Chair of Department of Music, 1983-1988 and Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-1998 and Director of Deans in the College of Letters and Science from 1994 to 1998).
